What are the benefits of meditation?

Meditation is thousands of years old, at least to ancient India and China, according to the psychology website Positive Psychology. Basically, it is a mind training method that has been shown to benefit psychological well-being.

Meditation can help people feel calm, relaxed and mentally balancedaccording to National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH), a US government agency.

It can also help people cope with illness and improve overall health. Some research suggests that meditation can lower blood pressure and relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, the National Institutes of Health says. It can also help with insomnia and relieve anxiety and depression.

How do you meditate?

Quiet environment away from distractions For example, televisions, radios and mobile phones are key elements of meditation, according to the Mayo Clinic US Medical Center.

What else does meditation research say?

A 2019 study by Michigan State University suggests that meditation can help people make fewer mistakes.

The study, published in the journal Brain Sciences, took 200 people who had never meditated and had them try to meditate for 20 minutes. The results show that meditation can “enhance the brain’s ability to detect errors and pay attention to them,” the authors say.

Another study published in the journal Psychological reports in 2021 by Florida International University – links decrease in attentiveness with emotional instability and “cognitive failures” such as memory lapses, difficulty concentrating, and errors in routine activities.

This may lead us to make more mistakes.

BUT a study of 73 adults conducted by the University of Innsbruck in Austria found those who meditate are more able to overcome automatic reactions to certain trigger events.for example check your phone as soon as it receives a notification.
