SALISBURY, NC, June 23, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Food Lion honored a select group of food banks, volunteers, community leaders and employees at the seventh annual Food Lion Feeds Feedys Awards. The event honored those who dedicate their time and talents to providing food, resources, education and hope to neighbors struggling with food insecurity in the cities where Food Lion serves.

Feedys Awards 2022 winners include:

Food King Award – Metrolin Food Bank Second Harvest (Charlotte, NC)
This award recognizes a food bank that demonstrates an outstanding commitment to financially supporting, innovating, encouraging and motivating others to take leadership roles in hunger relief programs and participate in society. Second Harvest Food Bank in Metrolin, a vital part of the community that has served 24 counties in North and South Carolina for over 40 years, develops partnerships to ensure families get healthy, nutritious food. The food bank team consistently exceeds Feeding America’s standard in pounds of food provided to families living in poverty. They have given away over 160 million pounds of food and donated 1 million boxes of balanced meals. In addition, Metrolina provided 97 million pounds of fresh food, meat and dairy products and served more than 102,000 families through its mobile school pantries. Lionheart Award – Rachel Ayers, Executive Director of Helping and Healing Hearts (Smithfield, NC)
This award recognizes an individual who demonstrates outstanding skills in coordinating and motivating groups of donors and volunteers for hunger relief projects for Food Lion Feeds and its partner food banks. An indispensable partner for the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, which serves children, families, and seniors in the Johnson County Mobile Market, Ayers is the CEO of Helping and Healing Hearts, Inc. basic necessities in rural areas served by her organization. Big Lion Award – Shuman Farms Products (Reidesville, GA)
This award, presented to a Food Lion supplier, recognizes outstanding commitment to partnering with and participating in Food Lion Feeds’ hunger-fighting projects. As a thought leader in the industry, Shuman Farms advances corporate outreach initiatives to inspire and encourage families in all aspects of health: nutrition, mental health, fitness and overall wellness. Through its various charitable projects and programs, Shuman Farms has donated more than 12 million meals to Feeding America since 2002. They created the Healthy Family Project to encourage the manufacturing industry to come together to create a healthier generation and raise funds for community outreach. Lion Pride Award – Joyce Herbin, Regional Recruiting Specialist (Elizabeth City, NC)
This award recognizes a Food Lion employee who demonstrates outstanding skills in coordinating and motivating store employees and volunteers for hunger relief projects for Food Lion Feeds and its partner food banks. Herbin has led a regional effort to encourage Food Lion neighbors to purchase more than 20,000 citrus bags, the equivalent of 100,000 meals. Roaring Store Award – Food Lion at 620 Laura Duncan Rd., Apex, NC 27502.
This award recognizes a Food Lion store that demonstrates outstanding skills in coordinating and motivating store employees, customers and volunteers to participate in hunger relief projects for Food Lion Feeds and its partner food banks. This store was chosen because of an outstanding team of employees committed to helping fight food insecurity. In 2021, the store generously donated over 107,000 meals through in-store sales campaigns and food donations that helped feed children and families in Wake County. Silver Plate Award – Peggy Dooley-Eisley, Communications Specialist (Salisbury, NC)

Peggy Dooley-Isley, a Food Lion employee who retired in May, has been recognized for her 37 years of service in Food Lion communities. Through her selfless service, she helped develop the Food Lion Food Rescue Program, in which food is donated to neighbors before it goes bad. In addition, she has been an important partner with food banks, food agencies and pantries, recruiting volunteers for hundreds of events to support Food Lion’s efforts to provide 1.5 billion meals by 2025.
