New this year in the Environment Ranking category, disaster data from the FEMA National Risk Index highlights the threats facing communities across the country. According to the escort US News and World Report An analysis of the index and data from the US Census Bureau showed that indigenous peoples are most at risk from natural disasters. “The data behind the Healthiest Communities rankings provides a deep insight into the state of health equity in our country,” said Kim Castro, editor and content director at US News and World Report. “By examining disaster data, we can see how different demographic groups are exposed to risk related to their environment.”

Along with the rankings, the Healthiest Communities project includes additional resources. For the third year in a row, county-level coronavirus data on metrics such as cases, deaths, and vaccination rates is available through the COVID-19 Data Center and Your Community. Earlier this year, CVS Health launched Health Zones, an initiative that provides concentrated local investments to reduce health inequalities and improve health equity in under-resourced communities across the country. Health Zones is a comprehensive approach to addressing six key social determinants of health: housing, education, access to food, work, transport and access to healthcare. The Health Zones initiative currently operates in five markets nationwide: Atlanta; Columbus, Ohio; Fresno, California; Hartford, Connecticut; and Phoenix, with plans to expand to other cities later this year. Working with trusted national and local partners, CVS Health serves the health needs of the community and ensures that at-risk groups have access to resources and opportunities that can help them thrive.

Communities with lower scores in the mental health subcategory tend to have lower life expectancy, lower median household income and labor force participation, and higher levels of poverty.

Rural communities are likely to have a higher proportion of adults reporting frequent mental illness, and urban communities are likely to have a higher proportion of Medicare recipients diagnosed with depression.
